Vista Preview Pane

Where, oh where did my preview pane go?

QUESTION:
I have a Vista computer and I used to have a preview pane in Explorer that showed the document without opening the program (for example, if you highlight a Word document, it shows up in the pane on the right). Somehow I've lost that. I read you can enable it with the Organize choice but I can't find a way to do it, that choice isn't in the list. Can you help? Thanks. - Rob S.

ANSWER:
The Preview Pane is an incredibly handy feature in Vista. If you click Organize | Layout, you should see a list of choices that include the Menu Bar, Search Pane, Navigation Pane, Preview Pane and Details Pane. If the last two aren't on the list, that usually is because you've enabled Windows Classic Folders. Do this:

1. Click Organize and select Folders and Search Options.
2. Click the General tab.
3. Under Tasks, you will probably see that "Use Windows Classic Folders" is selected. Instead, select "Show preview and filters."
4. Click OK.

Now when you go back to Organize | Layout, the Preview and Details panes should be in the list so you can select them

How to pin folders to the Start menu

You already know that you can "pin" your favorite programs to the top of the Start menu so they're always there and easily accessible. Wouldn't it be cool if you could also pin specific folders there to make them just as easy to get to? Sure, you can put a shortcut on the desktop, but some folks prefer to keep their desktops uncluttered. Well, there's a registry edit that will allow you to add an item to the right context menu for folders so you can pin them to the Start menu. As always, back up the registry before making changes.

1. Open your registry editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
2. Right click an empty space in the right pane and select New | Key
3. Name the new key {a2a9545d-a0c2-42b4-9708-a0b2badd77c8}
4. You do not need to give it a value.

Now when you right click a folder while holding down the Shift key, you'll see an option in the context menu to "Pin to Start Menu." To disable the capability, delete this key.

Vista Snipping Tool

The Snipping Tool does come with all versions except Home Basic. If you have the business or enterprise version, though, you might not see it in the Accessories menu. That's because you need to turn it on. Here's how:

1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Open the Programs and Features applet if you're in Classic View. If you're in Category view (Control Panel Home), you need to select Programs and then Programs and Features.
3. In the left task pane, click Turn Windows Features On or Off. You'll probably have to click Continue or enter Administrative credentials to access this.
4. Scroll down in the list, then check the box labeled Tablet PC Optional Components. The Snipping Tool is one of these components.
5. Click OK.
